CHECKING OUT HORSE TAIL FALLS
We had some spare time this weekend so my wife and I decided to pack up the kiddo, get in the car, and drive down the I-84 to see what we could find. Along the way we ran in to Horse Tail Falls, we decided to pull over and explore a bit. As soon as we pulled up to a trailhead parking lot I looked up and saw the sharp mountains above fighting with the clouds, without really planning or setting anything up I took a quick snap with my 70-200 and got this picture. I have to say that I am extremely happy with it considering that it was just a quick snap. From the parking lot we decided to walk the short trail to check out a near by waterfall.
As you can see by this photo the sky was absolutely covered with clouds creating a really cool vibe and dramatic lighting for photography. This is one thing that I absolutely love about the Pacific Northwest, the clouds, there can be none, or so many, and in so many different shapes, opacities and arrangements allowing for some really creative and dramatic photography year round.
We came up to the waterfall and I wanted to snap a few pictures but I soon learned that that would be extremely difficult. First, there were a ton of tourists out that day all taking selfies in front of the fall, and second the fall was spitting out so much water that in a matter of half a second my lens was just covered with water spots. After patiently waiting for everyone to get their snapchat filters and so on going and timing my shot just right to work with the water spray I was finally able to get a shot that I liked, unfortunately, this was the only shot that I liked. That’s the reality of photography sometimes, you put in a ton of work and get minimal or no photos out, and other times minimal work and get a gold mine, it’s a part of the process.
As we were hiking back towards the car I saw this tree in the distance that was getting absolutely blasted with sunlight through all of the suffocating clouds that were flattening everything else around it. The sunlight really made the colors of the tree pop and provided for an interesting scene in an otherwise cold and gloomy day. At this point it stated to get much colder and the rain was coming back in so we decided to call it a day (typically I would rough the weather solo for some great shots but you have to be in dad mode first when you have the family with you). Till next time…
