MINI PHOTO SHOOT
Ever since we took my soon to the Ballard Locks he has been talking about tug boats and big ships and has been wanting to go back. Yesterday we finally had a dry day so we decided to take him out for a short adventure.
Since the last time we were here I had my 24-70mm F2.8 G Master attached to my A7RIV I decided that this time I would take out the 12-24mm F2.8 G Master and mix it up a little.
I originally intended to shoot some photos of boats and maybe a different perspective of the locks at a much wider field of view but while standing there looking at boats I decided to instead capture my son and his passion for watching the boats and airplanes go by. As soon as I turned the camera towards him he started to at first pose and cheese but then decided to run towards me and say “daddy what are you doing?”
As I mentioned in my post about his first photo shoot, when working with children you have to have a fast shutter speed and a fast camera or you will miss the moment and end up with blurry pictures. I decided to go with 1/640th of a second and with the A7RIV’s awesome eye auto focus was able to capture him all the way up to the point where he was right in front of my lens (thankfully by then I zoomed out to 12mm or he would have been too close to capture).
When I got in to Lightroom to review and edit the photos I was pleased with what I saw as a starting point and since I have been on this black and white kick lately I naturally started with editing the photo and visualizing it in black and white. After finishing my edit I decided that it just didn’t have the pop that I wanted in full black and white so I ended up with a compromise, some muted color and mostly whites, blacks and grays. I am extremely pleased with how the edits came out after making that decision and am pleased overall with the photos, especially considering that it was not a planned photo shoot. Till next time…
